The LOCKSS (Lots Of Copies Keep Stuff Safe) program, based in the Stanford Library, provides libraries with open-source software they can run on low-cost hardware to build collections of content published on the Web. The project will celebrate its 10th anniversary this year. It has more than 200 participating libraries collecting genres including e-journals, electronic theses and dissertations, government documents, and cultural resources. It is based on award-winning computer science research by a team including Dr. Petros Maniatis and Prof. Mema Roussopoulos.

The talk will discuss the problems caused for libraries by the transition from paper to the Web as the publishing medium of choice, and how the design of the LOCKSS system addresses them. These include the changes from purchasing to leasing content, from a robust, durable, write-once medium to a fragile, rewritable medium, and from a delivery system with in-built delays to one requiring instantaneous response. It will show how the LOCKSS system's peer-to-peer architecture extends time-tested attributes of paper libraries, including locally owned and managed collections of content replicas, and cooperative arrangements such as inter- library loan and copy, into the electronic era.

Ο Dr David Rosenthal είναι Chief Scientist του προγράμματος LOCKSS. Κατά την περίοδο 1985-1993 εργάστηκε στην εταιρεία Sun Microsystems όπου έγινε γνωστός για την εργασία του στο σύστημα Χ Windows.
