Volunteers with the time and disposition to get involved in localising
the low-cost laptop for school pupils for the Greek market, currently
being developed by the international non-profit organisation "One Laptop
per Child (OLPC)" on the initiative of the founder of the MIT Media Lab,
Prof. N. Negroponte, are being sought by the board in charge of the
initiative to localise the computer for the Greek market.
This is a laptop which will not cost more than $ 100, so that all
children can have access to knowledge and new technology. The laptop's
operating system is Linux and is based on open software, while its smart
design offers options on a par with those of a modern laptop. The
specific computers will be distributed exclusively via government
initiatives directly to schools.
The software for the Greek version of the laptop will be developed
voluntarily by the Open Source community under the aegis of the
Secretariat for the Information Society. The Board is seeking
individuals to establish the Greek volunteers team. The people needed
are:
- Developers to adapt and improve existing applications and develop new
ones;
- Translators to translate and adapt the software and
applications into Greek;
- Teachers and members of the educational
community to design, develop and evaluate educational applications and
scenarios;
- Organisations or labs to develop, test and demonstrate
software applications.
