New Research Centres in Western Greece and Epirus

The creation of two new research centres in the regions of Western Greece and Epirus was included in the proposals of a recent assembly of the National Council on Research and Technology (NCRT).

Specifically, according to the presentation of the Dean of the University of Ioannina, Professor Ioannis Gerothanasis, the Epirus Research and Technology Centre will consist of four research institutes:

- Natural Bioactive Substances Research and Technology Institute
- Institute for the Management and Protection of Water Resources
- Institute of Optical and Surface Technologies
- Institute for Innovation in Education.

Professor Petros Groubas, President and CEO of the Patras Scientific Park, presented the proposal for the Western Greece Research Centre, which will comprise the following research institutes:

- the Institute of Food and Drug Science and Technology
- the Research and Technology Institute for Medicine
- the Institute for Structures and State of the Art Materials
- the Institute for Environmental Sustainability
- the Institute of Enterprise, Innovation & Regional Development.

It should be noted that the Centre for Research, Technology and Development of Thessaly is already operational, while the possibility of establishing a research centre in Eastern Macedonia, based in Xanthi, is being explored.
