"Smart" material from Greek nanotechnology company

04/02/2009

A complete series of products which water-proof and protect everyday surfaces, utilising the most advanced findings of nanotechnology science, have been developed by the Greek Company NanoPhos which, in less than three years, has won significant awards and realises exports to the United Kingdom, Cyprus, Norway, Denmark, Spain, Portugal, Poland and Bulgaria.

The product range of NanoPhos found on the market today are SurfaPore and DeSalin. The SurfaPore products, with a simple coating, water-proof and protect materials such as concrete, stone, tiles, wood, or marble without changing their natural appearance. This simple application allows the infinitesimally small nanoparticles which the product contains to permanently enter the pores of the material. With this method, the surfaces repel moisture, are protected against erosion and the development of fungus and micro-organisms, while marble and tiles do not get dirty.

In contrast to products with two or more components, or silicone products, the product does not create a "plastic protective film" and it does not alter the appearance of the surfaces. It is water based, does not contain dangerous solvents and does not burden the environment. It ensures great resistance over time, with conservation of 95% of the initial action over a period of up to eight years. Additionally "hard" solar radiation (ultra-violet spectrum) does not affect the protection.

The company has also developed the DeSalin product range for the effective cleaning of spoiled polished marbles. The NanoPhos products are addressed both to industrial customers and also to private customers, with a specially affordable price for everyone.

NanoPhos recently received the first place award in the innovation and viability sector in the international exhibition "100% Detail", one of the most significant exhibitions of structural products that was held in London. The company was selected from among 150 exhibitors for its technologically advanced and yet simple-to-apply products. The President of the Judging Committee, Andrew Waugh, stressed that the products are surprising because they combine the effective improvement of durability of the surfaces of buildings and conserve energy. NanoPhos was also rewarded by Bill Gates himself, in January 2008, for the innovation of its products.

It is noted that the company was founded in 2005 with registered offices in the Technological Park of Lavrio. The business plan of the co-founders of NanoPhos, Dr I Arampatzis and Professor V. Theoharakis won first prize in the "European Business Plan of the Year Competition 2005" competition in which they participated as representatives of the educational institution ALBA.
