Dr Vassilis Maglaris, professor at the National Technical University of Athens, has been elected President of the Policy Committee of the European advanced broadband network GEANT and all National Research & Education Networks (NRENs) of Europe for the next two years. It is certain that the imminent presidency of Dr Maglaris will significantly enhance the role of Greece in the new generation research and education networks.

The main task of the Policy Committee is to formulate strategies that focus on the further development of GEANT and its members, NRENs. GEANT consists of 33 educational and research European networks, with the Greek Research and Technology Network one of several prominent members. Today, more than three thousand national research centres, academic - technological institutes, and educational organisations are connected with GEANT, serving more than ten million end - users.

At the same time, the European research and technological community moves promptly forward to the upgrading of GEANT. With the primary aim of creating a better infrastructure for NRENs connectivity, of supporting research groups across Europe, and of increasing their efforts in support of international high quality projects, GEANT also aims to promote European web services at a global level.
