The project for the "Promotion of Broadband Access and Services in the
Region of Western Greece" aims to promote broadband services and
infrastructure at a technical, financial and commercial level, and to
foster a "broadband culture" in this administrative region. It is being
realized by the Academic Computer Technology Research Institute (ACTRI)
of the University of Patras, as part of the Information Society
Operational Programme.
This three-year project is directed at organisations involved in the
design and implementation of broadband access projects, Small and Medium
sized enterprises, providers and users of telecommunication services.
Its purpose is to provide information on the investment opportunities
and challenges for broadband networks, the advantages of these services,
etc.
The project's major activities are to provide information specific
target groups and to demonstrate the capabilities of broadband Internet
access. To this end, the project undertakes studies on the demand,
necessity and potential development of broadband infrastructure and
services, organises information events, places advertisements in printed
and electronic information media, distributes printed material and
operates centres for the demonstration of broadband capabilities and
services.
Furthermore, a Web site has been developed for the purpose of promoting
and publicising broadband access and services; this site provides
information on the projects, scenarios on the use of broadband services,
international initiatives, news and events, regulatory information and
business plans, invitations for tenders, etc. A telephone line for help
on matters of broadband access is also available.
It is worth noting that, as part of the project, an information event
was held on 19 March 2005 in Patras, with subjects such as: the
significance of the development of broadband infrastructures in Greece,
the positive effect of new technologies on the citizens' daily life,
projects and initiatives undertaken in the Region, for the development
of broadband infrastructure and services.
