1st "Wizards of Science" Scientific Experiment Contest

06/11/2007

The first "Wizards of Science" Scientific Experiment Contest, where scientists and educators present innovative ideas for scientific experiments to the public and particularly to young people and children, will be organised by the Centre of Applied Industrial Design (CAID) in February 2008.

The aim of the contest is to draw the attention of young people to science, to spark children's curiosity in experimentation and the quest for knowledge, and to encourage them to get involved in science. The contest will reward talented young scientists, mobilise teachers into seeking out innovative teaching methods, provide information to parents about orienting children towards science, and enchant children using scientific truth as its tool.

Scientists and teachers from all over Greece are invited to develop and carry out innovative experiments to explain scientific phenomena and theories in a clear manner, using simple equipment and everyday objects. The following scientific fields are covered: physics, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, biology, geology, the environment, phytology, new technologies and informatics.

Anyone interested should submit an application by 15 January 2007. Applications will be evaluated in two stages: initially the most innovative ideas presented in the contest will be chosen and then a special panel comprising scientists, teachers, educationalists, experts, journalists and parents will select the final winners. The evaluation criteria will be scientific reliability, ease of communication, innovation and creativity.

During the contest, participants will have a chance to talk to the public and answer questions. Science films will also be screened and there will be workshops, exhibitions of scientific books and CDs, a science cafe and other activities that combine learning and leisure. Entry for the public will be free.

More information and the application form are available on the CAID website.
